The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the BRONZE STAR MEDAL to

for service as set forth in the following CITATION:

For heroic achievement in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam while serving as a Rifleman with Company M, Third Battalion, Twenty-Seventh Marines, First Marine Division. On the afternoon of 24 May 1968 during Operation Allen Brook, Company M was. assigned to assist a friendly unit which was pinned down by intense automatic weapons fire from a large North Vietnamese Army force near the village of Le Bac (1) in Quang Nam Province. As Lance Corporal SWAGERTY's squad neared the besieged unit's position, the Marines suddenly came under a heavy volume of sniper fire and were unable to evacuate several casualties who lay in positions dangerously exposed to the hostile fire. Although his rifle was struck by the enemy fire and rendered inoperative, Lance Corporal SWAGERTY boldly advanced across the fire-swept terrain and located the source of hostile fire. Disregarding his own safety, he fearlessly exposed himself to the accurate fire and skillfully hurled numerous hand grenades at the camouflaged emplacement, silencing the enemy fire and allowing his comrades to evacuate the wounded. His bold initiative and resolute determination inspired all who observed him and contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit's mission_ Lance Corporal SWAGERTY's courage, aggressive fighting spirit and steadfast devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

Lance Corporal SWAGERTY is authorized to wear the Combat "V".
